Con-way Freight said it will boost rates by an average 4.7% for noncontractual business, effective Oct. 27.

The less-than-truckload unit of Con-way Inc. said the increase will affect general LTL rates, minimum charges, accessorial and other supplemental fees.

The increase will be for shipments within the United States and Canada, cross-border shipments between the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada, and the U.S. portion of shipments to Mexico.

Con-way said the increase would offset rising costs for “enhanced compensation programs to attract and retain quality drivers, increased regulatory compliance . . . [and] equipment costs and technology upgrades.”

Con-way Freight is a unit of Con-way Inc., which ranks No. 4 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
